About Anawangin, Capones & Camara Island

ANAWANGIN

Anawangin is one of the best beaches in the Philippines to spend your vacation. It  is currently the most visited amongst its neighboring coves in San Antonio, Zambales.

Anawangin is a crescent shaped cove with a pristine white sand beach and volcanic ash. What makes the place unique is the unusual riddle of tall pine trees flourishing round its vicinity. You can reach Anawangin by a 30 minute boat ride from Pundaquit, San Antonio, Zambales. The cove's relative isolation has kept it free from development. Just behind the beach is the pine forest and a marsh, where one can find natural springs feeding to the sea and the area is home to a number of bird species.

There is no phone signal on the virgin island, so the only thing that might disturb you is the birds singing in the morning, splashes of the water or the wind blowing through the pine trees.

Capones Island is one of the main attractions in Pundaquit Zambales. The island is actually a big lump of rock formation with very little soil. One of the best things to do on the island, aside from just hanging around, is to trek for about 30 minutes and take a tour of the lighthouse.

Camara Island is the closest island from the shore of Pundaquit Zambales. The island, like its close neighbor Capones, is also a big lump of rock with very little soil. Trees aren’t that many but because of the rock formations and angle of the island, it’s not hard to find shade and scenic spots for a great photo shoot. It has two sides separated by a white sandbar that becomes visible during the lowtide and disappears during the high tide. Big rocks that dwarf the tourists are plenty on this island.

HOW TO GET TO ANAWANGIN

Via commute, OPTION A. easiest way is to ride a Victory liner bus going to Iba or Sta. Cruz  Zambales which will pass through San Antonio Zambales. Travel time is usually 4 hours. The regular fare is P260/head(prior to change).

OPTION B. is to take a bus bound for Olongapo City (via SCTEX, much faster). Fare is P210 for Olongapo City. Then, ride any bus going to Iba or Sta Cruz. Fare is P50-P70.

Then, from the munc. of San Antonio, you can ride a tricycle going to Pundaquit Beach, P30/head ONLY! (travel time is 15-20 mins). Then from the shore of Brgy. Pundaquit, take a boat ride to Anawangin J

THINGS TO DO IN ANAWANGIN:

·         Bonfire
Natives in Anawangin sell firewood for bonfire but you can also gather fallen twigs,leaves and light up a fire for warmth during the night. Bring a guitar so you can sing around the campfire. J

·         Climb
The beach is bound by two cliffs in the north and south. The southern cliff is easier to climb. You can get a great view of the beach at the top of it. Just be careful and watch out your steps.

·         Trek
Behind the evergreen forest is a stream (a dry riverbed in the summer) leading to a large hill. You can trek your way to this hill, just be cautious. You can also trek from Pundaquit going to Anawangin (4 to 6 hours trek) if you want some adventure. J

·         Skimboard/Surf
You could bring your skimboard to practice your moves. The beach is great for this activity since it has a fine sand, few rocks and big waves.

TIPS:

* It is easier to ride a bus going to San Antonio from Caloocan rather than in Cubao Terminal Station because every hour there's a bus going to Iba Zamabales from Victory Liner Caloocan. Click here to check Victory Liner’s schedule.
* If you are a student, better bring your school I.D. to have a 20 % discount in bus but FYI, during semestral break and summer vacay, bus companies DO NOT give away discounts for students UNLESS if you are enrolled in summer class(have your C.O.R.with you) or if you are enrolled in a trimestral schools (just present your I.D.)
* If you're going to Anawangin, better leave Manila as early as 3 a.m. so that you will arrrive at San Antonio by 7 a.m. and by that time, the market is already open and you could buy some pork, fish and etc.
* There is a small grocery across San Antonio's market(beside Nora's canteen) in which you can buy drinking water, junkfoods, paper cups/plates, cold beverages and other necessities.
* It's better to buy fishes in San Antonio's market rather than in the shore of Pundaquit because usually, there is a middle man in selling freshly catch fishes in Pundaquit.
* There is a sari-sari store in Anawangin. They sell canned goods, softdrinks, alcoholic drinks, cigarettes and even blocks of ice(P60). --a bit pricey so I suggest that you buy food in other place before going to Anawangin.
* Bring a blanket because it is cold in the morning in Anawangin. And if you're not comfy to sleep using your bag as your pillow then better bring a real pillow.
* Bring flashlight or rechargeable lamp if you're planning an overnight trip to Anawangin.

* Be reminded of the divisions of Anawangin because going overboard or going over the fence of the other resort will cost you another entrance fee.

* RESEARCH alot before going to a certain place so that you will enjoy your stay J
